Don’t really talk like this
or you’ll get fired

Normally, funny television shows and concepts are created in Britain, and then retooled for America. For once it is the other way round, with this video’s take on the American original.

The concept and execution remains both funny and well done, though this version gets so specific it might lack relevance to anyone who has never worked in exactly the circumstances portrayed. My only criticism might be the fake ad at the end is far too bad; even higher produced commercials born of banality still have at least a minimal level of production values.

I think this is from Space Ghost

This ancient commercial gem dates back to 1986, when a young William H. Macy was doing local New York City area commercials. Using the power of typing things into Google, I have placed the ‘Hanover’ mentioned in this spot to New Jersey.

From watching this its evident that Macy has a really electric advertising voice. I wish at least once in each one of his movies he would turn to the camera and talk briefly to the audience about where they could find local savings.

Nothing is broken
Everything is fine

We’ve implemented a new design template for Awful Commercials, and the forums are now live. If you encounter any site problems please let me know, though things are most likely working better than before, not worse. For instance the ‘next page’ button now appears at the bottom entry lists. And that weird smell is gone.

If you’ve registered with the site through Wordpress, that should be your forum login. If you have trouble registering or logging in please let me know.

It’s just like every fucking Thanksgiving

This one-minute spot for Bud Light I unfortunately don’t have any back story on. I would suspect it never aired, and is just used to promote the bud.tv link mentioned at the end of the spot.

This spot is pretty good, especially for the times where it’s not 100% clear what the swears actually are intended to be. The woman’s reaction to “that’s doesn’t count” might be the high point of the spot.

It’s really a shame the FCC is so uptight about this kind of thing, though I guess some of you out there have fucking kids to raise.

Honey go see who is at the door

I found this old print ad from the 70’s via advertising is good for you. The print ad tells the French that’s it’s now possible to fly to the Big Apple in just under 17 hours time. This now ominous ad is a good example of how an ad or other media work can become unintentionally offensive with the passage of time. Like the ill-timed planned first release of Collateral Damage, or this gem of an album cover which was later used by 911truth dot org to promote its ‘planted explosives’ theory. Notice the government agent behind the guy with the detonator ‘directing’ the event.
