Sonic Rejected

When they knocked the tot out of my
friend’s hand, I said nothing

Here’s another regional gem, this one from the Sonic fast food franchise. The commercial is pretty funny, a guy tries to eat a tater tot, and his friend smacks it away. Actually there is nothing funny about that, I get angry just thinking about it.

Sonic’s campaign comes off well, perhaps taking a clue from the low-budget “I’m Lovin’ It” McDonalds campaign and presenting the commercial with as little attention to production values as possible. Aside from just consisting of a few basic shots of two guys talking in their car, the quality of the video looks like radio-shack-bought camera quality. Maybe it’s supposed to look like a hidden camera. Maybe these are just two guys who don’t know they are being filmed. Oh man this is totally blowing my mind.

It all adds to the shtick of the spots, and is one of those strange examples of an awful commercial being very good.

I don’t recommend checking out the Tot Rejection website. Even if you can get it to load, (I had to right click after it loaded and select ‘play’) it’s not really worth anyone’s time.

  1. Ahhh….what you you failed to mention is continous homo erotic undertones which are pervaisive throughout the spots that feature these two guys.

The rigid dark haired guy always in the drivers seat; the relatively vacant, but affable goober riding shotgun. They’ve toned down some of the innuendo (most of it was in timing), but at one point even my wife said…”they’ve stopped just short including the KY Jelly on the dashboard.”

Thier alternative spots feature a woefully emasculated male and snippy wife verbally duking it out over a snack.

Sometimes engaging, but usually I get the feeling that the director is playing out some unfinished psychodrama that occured hours earlier. They claim these are all ad-libb….I seriously doubt that.

  2. Elements of the content maybe stemmed from ad-libbing, but it does seem too polished to think this just “happened”.

As for the man-on-man sexual tension, I’ll leave that to the self-taught experts.

  3. These commercials have been airing for years (at least down south! ugh). Anyway a current “Two Guys” ad has the blond dude extolling the virtues of a “sausage and gravy sandwich”! I. AM. NOT. KIDDING.

  4. I don’t know but i’d totally do that chick that plays the wife in those ads. She is very hot in a MILF sort of way …

  5. I like how this commercial’s plot changes everytime rather than being a continuos repitition of the same outline over and over again.

    Guy: Says something

    Other Guy: Says something

Guy: Says or does something stupid

    Other Guy: Comments on it

*Long pause followed by the punching noise and a picture of the food they where promoting*

These men have apparently become the new mascots for Sonic, which creeps me out a little because this means they’re going to be showing up all over the country every time a new sonic opens. Kids will sit on their laps while their parents take pictures of them giving the peace sign. And worst of all, teenagers might start dressing up as them for halloween. These guys haunt my nightmares more then the new burger king mascot who likes to hide in the back seats of peoples cars or sleep in their bed while they’re asleep and presents them with a sandwich which I bet is made out of the ground up bodies of the last people he scared the crap out of.
