| The Original Snicker’s Super Bowl Ad Super Bowl XLI Commercial |
I had other things I really needed to do today besides talking about man-on-man kissing, but the advertising world has once again forced my hand. You can follow the video link from the still shot to see the Snickers ad that’s making some news, the one that featured men accidentally kissing, and then ripping out their chest hair to compensate for the taboo act.
I would have imagined this ad might have trolled up some controversy, but I would have put my money on anti-gay, “how dare you make my kids see this” “Janet Jackson, put your titty away” type people making a fuss over it. The biggest news-makers complaining so far have been gay advocacy groups, apparently not so much about the ad that ran, but over the content of some of the alternate endings that Snickers posted to their web site, in conjunction with some players’ reactions that were posted to the YouTube.
As best I can tell, this was part of some marketing effort to make viewers vote for their favorite (or least-offending) ending. I’m sure stirring up some controversy was part of the ultimate marketing idea too.
Some of the complaints from the gay community are over the perceived anti-gay attitudes of some of the NFL players in the video, while other reactions complain about the notion that men must punish themselves for accidentally committing a gay act.
It seems like when a group protests or complains about media content, the content gets all the more play and free publicity, so it will be interesting to see whether or not the Mars corporation counts this as a net publicity gain or loss.

This is by far the worst display of people trying to promte this type crap in your face and then act like it’s O.K. I’m not homo-phobic.One thing I don’t don’t need is my family subjected to is the type of garbage with men kissing over a stupid piece of chemicallly filled crap candy bar!!and that’s with kids around during the super bowl or any other family event. I’ll still be offended by the commercial if I were by myself. The people at Mars and the station that allowed this to be aired are a freaking joke their products will no longer be permitted in my house!!!

[…] This “campaign” actually has its roots in trying to capitalize on scandal: This first spot was a year after the Janet Jackson *slide whistle noise* scandal, and obviously was trying to make some kind of connection with the incident. Another year later it’s just no match for men kissing over a Snickers bar. What happened to the wholesome full-frontal female nudity Super Bowl days of yore? Gone forever. Now middle America is begging, begging for some Janet Jackson titty to shock their children straight again. Well I hope you’ve all learned your lesson. […]
