Buy this sofa or Bob will hurt me

Here’s a cheap local commercial for Bob’s Furniture, a chain of furniture stores in the north eastern United States. Compared to most commercials, this is definitely cheaply done, but compared to other local furniture commercials its somewhat bearable. At least Bob isn’t screaming about going out of business for the hundredth time. But watch Bob’s co-host while Bob is speaking. She appears to be miming Bob’s body movements while she is not speaking. I don’t even want to attempt a guess why.

My big complaint here would be the long static shot of the two on the couch. One or two quick close up cut-aways while they were talking might make this thirty second spot feel a little less like a five-minute infomercial. My real question for Bob is why is he airing this commercial when he has a handful of much better commercials on his web site? There are some amusing stop motion spots on there that would catch someone’s attention a lot better than this.

  1. I find all of Bob’s commercials annoying - mostly due to the dumb blonde over-acting co-star. Based on his commercials, I’ll never give him my business.

  2. If crucifixion were legal, I’d have that woman, Bob, and whoever writes his commercials hanging in the breeze.

There is no commercial on TV more innane or insipid than this moron’s.

My wife and I agree. For as long as that imbecile woman is on those commercials, and for as long as the word “BOB” precedes his products (”EDIT -keep the web site clean, -editor” ?) we will NEVER set footin one of his stores.

  3. Hiring an advertising company can help a lot. Sometimes it better to pay that extra for the quality. I have to say he has some nice dining tables on his website.

  4. I am drivin into a homicidal frenzy every time I see those commercials, that obnoxious blond blowzer and Bob’s absurd fake smile. How the hell do you get the nerve to call a piece of furniture the “Power Bob” ? Gag ! I’ll NEVER buy anything form his stores and I’d like to lock that broad in a room with a bunch of convicted sodomites. That will shut her the #$%^& up!

  5. Technically sodomy can be very minor acts, so convicted sodomites may just be unlucky with the law, and not ravenous penetrating machines.

  6. I make those crappy ads. I also make quite a few other ads that you see every day. My ads generate billions of dollars in sales every year. Okay Bart - try to crucify me. I’ll buy ALL the wood with ALL the money I make, and you won’t be able to make a cross. HA!

  7. I love this comercial…. Reminds me of good old 70’s Tv lol

  8. Oh God, someone put them out of their misery! Makes me want to sit on the floor.

  9. Hey Teak,
    Billions of dollars! BILLIONS!

  10. I love the way her legs flip up when she engages the foot stool thing! That is so tacky! We have similar ads in the UK - including ones for cheap furniture but also for cars.

  11. How this sells anything i’ll never know! :)

  12. While I will agree his commercials are tacky, they obviously do their job at creating brand awareness. With so many ads shown on tv daily, some will choose the road of over the top, wacky, ridiculous, advertising to stand out from the crowd. However, the majority of people will find themselves thinking of Bob when the time comes for furniture shopping. Even if they find his ads annoying, the prices may be reason enough to at least pay them a visit. Obviously Bob’s targeted customer base is not high end but more low to mid-class.

  13. You hit the nail on the head, Believe . . .but you’d be surprised at the number of “high end” customers who buy from Bob. Many, however, ask if their delivery can be made with an unmarked truck . .

  14. Yummy old commercials, lol. Seriously, though, they’re sooooo cheesy and almost painful to watch!
